I was (sorta) on the set of The Walking Dead for the filming of the opening scene of Episode 12. I and other reporters drank La Croix and watched a feed from the camera filming the Whisperers’ feet, which we did not know at the time would be the opening shot of the episode. We watched it on a grainy old monitor beneath a tent someplace close to the actual filming place, which we could not see for the reason that it was deep in the woods. We weren’t permitted to truly see the action, and we did not glimpse the face of Alpha (Samantha Morton) that day, but we heard her and Cassady McClincy do a handful of requires. So it was gratifying to watch this episode and ultimately get the complete context of what was taking place. I have no excellent insight into the episode beyond becoming in a position to say that McClincy’s sweat stains had been genuine, for the reason that it was HOT that day. Ryan Hurst is in all probability grateful his Whisperer mask does not cover his entire face, for the reason that a complete head-covering mask combined with that extended trench coat would in all probability kill him.

Hurst’s initial look on the show as hulking Whisperer second-in-command Beta was the highlight of “Guardians,” as was the fuller portrait we got of the Whisperer way of life. It appears like a quite poor way to reside! It is a brutal, loveless society exactly where your personal mother will inform you she only rescued you from captivity in order to uncover out what you discovered about your captors. Lydia performing a zombie stroll in typical clothing was kinda funny, although.

We saw the Whisperer camp via Henry’s (Matt Lintz) eyes, as he was caught by Beta when spying on the group and plotting how to get Lydia back. The Whisperers reside like a pack of wolves or coyotes, if wolves or coyotes had chores, such as dead skin mask manufacturing and repair. It was cool to see a form of society we’d by no means noticed just before on the show. The Whisperers seriously do reside like extremely sophisticated animals (much less sophisticated animals do not use garrote wire). Reduce-level members of the pack can challenge the Alpha, and two of them did, with really brutal benefits. It was the most gruesome and disturbing scene The Walking Dead has accomplished all season.

Alpha was challenged by a couple, a man who was supposed to do the fighting and a lady whose concept it was. They felt she had grown soft and ineffective as a leader. So Alpha came up behind the lady, place her head on her shoulder, and swiftly wrapped a wire about her neck and decapitated her. Then she held up the severed head for all to see just before forcing the dead woman’s boyfriend to hold it. He was crying, so she shushed him and mentioned, “Crying is weak,” then stabbed him to death. It was a horrifying scene that, taken in tandem with Alpha’s callous willingness to let a infant die final week, shows how depraved and cruel this character is. The violence was intense, but it was in service of the character, and Samantha Morton’s efficiency in this episode was certainly locked-in and terrifying. She’s currently a much better villain on the show than Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) ever was.

Alpha was mad at Lydia for not telling her about Henry, who of course cares sufficient about her to threat his life coming right after her. Lydia attempted to downplay his significance, but Alpha and Beta suspected Lydia cared about Henry, so right after Alpha told a chilling story about just about letting Lydia suffocate when she was a toddler as a way to teach her a lesson about playing with plastic wrap from the dry cleaner (“You have to do what ever it requires to shield what you adore, even from themselves”), she and Beta challenged her to kill Henry to prove he meant absolutely nothing to her and she was loyal to the Whisperers. If she did not, Beta would kill them each. Fortunate for them, a herd swarmed the camp, and in the chaos Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Connie (Lauren Ridloff), each wearing pilfered masks, slipped in and rescued them. Daryl at initial wanted to leave Lydia, but Henry refused unless she came with them. So the struggle more than Lydia is going to escalate this conflict into a complete-fledged war.

But at least Daryl could uncover some adore in the meantime! Our greasy, growly boy appears like he could be obtaining some butterflies from Connie. We saw him have some uncommon hapless moments, initial when he forgot that Connie was deaf and could not hear him when he faced away from her and mumbled, and then when his dog retrieved his arrow but would not give it back, snapping it. She seemed to feel these gaffes had been funny, although. They like each and every other!

The Walking Dead‘s Ryan Hurst Breaks Down Beta’s Arrival

We also spent some top quality time at Alexandria for the initial time in awhile. Michonne (Danai Gurira) was mad at absolutely everyone, but particularly Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam), who if you will recall indirectly began this entire point with the Whisperers in the initial spot with his forbidden radio and then he forgot to lock Negan up for the reason that he was distracted worrying about Rosita (Christian Serratos). Alexandria is ostensibly run by a council, but Michonne has the energy to veto the council’s choices if she feels it really is a threat to safety, and every little thing is a threat to safety. The Kingdom’s fair is coming up, but Michonne will not even permit there to be a vote about Alexandria attending.

She went to see Negan in his cell, and he asked her to start out to trust him, because he did not kill any one when he escaped and came back of his personal volition, and he can assistance her as a sort of leadership consultant. She was not at all interested, but then she saw Judith (Cailey Fleming) spying on them. She talked to her right after, and Judith confessed that she’d been speaking to Negan. Judith knows that Negan did poor issues, but he’s not like that any longer.

“I get why you want to think that,” Michonne mentioned. “But folks do not seriously alter.”

“You did,” Judith answered, which stopped Michonne in her tracks, for the reason that it really is accurate. She changed for the worse. The charter was her concept, and now she’s continually overriding it. So she went to Aaron (Ross Marquand) and told him that if the council desires to vote on sending a delegation to the Kingdom fair, she will not veto it. “I feel it really is a terrible concept, but the folks can weigh the dangers and opt for,” she mentioned. “That is their ideal. That is the charter we agreed to. And that is what we swore to shield. And it really is for the Kingdom.” Hopefully they will not reside to regret this.

How Michael Myers Inspired The Walking Dead‘s Horrifying Whisperer Masks

Oh, and it appears like Rosita and Father Gabriel are gonna operate it out, and Father Gabriel will raise Rosita and Siddiq’s (Avi Nash) kid as his personal! What a weird small adore story that is turned into. It was good to see Father Gabriel and Eugene (Josh McDermitt), who have each struggled with selfishness and cowardice, have a grown-up conversation about feelings and not operating away from duty. Michonne could appear at them of proof of folks altering, as well.

“Guardians” was a further powerful and properly-balanced episode of The Walking Dead. It moved the story along, hit some character beats and had some disgusting violence for the gorehounds. What far more could you want?

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9/8c on AMC. Earlier seasons are out there to stream on Netflix.
