The Kooks are a single of the extra regularly superior Britpop remnants, and Let’s Go Sunshine is their fifth studio release. It is also a single of these albums, although, exactly where vibrant, pop-rock melodies harbor far darker lyrics. The melodic hooks choose you up that is, at least, till the words bring you down.

“Four Leaf Clover” is a superior instance of this project’s general cognitive dissonance. The beat clicks along purposefully, though vocalist Luke Pritchard sings similarly chirping-ly. Even so, Pritchard also describes the womanly character in it as a single with “a true sick thoughts.” The chorus is almost “Eleanor Rigby” sad when Pritchard sings: “And when the evening is more than/And the drugs are gone/All you have got is your 4-leaf clover/You hold inside your coat.” Morrissey when sang, though fronting the Smiths, “I was satisfied in the haze of a drunken hour/But heaven knows I’m miserable now.”

Similarly, this girl is left with nothing at all extra than a symbol of superior luck and melancholic sobriety at the finish of the evening. This song’s character reminds me of an older version of junior higher character Elsie Fisher in the film Eighth Grade. In that memorably realistic film, Elsie creates life affirming YouTube videos for her fellow middle college students. In these clips, she explains how to have a satisfied life, like a precocious self-aid guru. In reality, although, this poor young girl is miserable, lonely and virtually absolutely lacking self-esteem. Similarly, the lady in The Kooks’ song has a “train wreck soul,” even although she writes a column for The Instances “for all the lovers gone blind.” In each circumstances, it is a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ circumstance.

One particular of the album’s handful of definitely joyful songs is “Honey Bee.” For a couple motives. For a single, it is set to a peppy, acoustic rockabilly groove. Secondly, it is a sincerely hopeful adore song, lyrically. Lastly, it capabilities Luke’s father Bob singing a single of its verses, creating for a single sweet vocal pairing.

In extra circumstances than not, although, Kooks songs leave the listener feeling extra than a tiny uneasy. One particular titled “Chickenbone” is about a guy that only feels at peace when he’s spending time with his plus sized girl a single that rolls him like a stone and playfully calls him ‘chickenbone.’ A particular person is left wonder just who is employing whom in this situation.

With “Weight of the Planet,” Pritchard (or at least’s Pritchard’s character) does not sound very so in handle. On a track that also capabilities singer/songwriter-y acoustic piano underpinning its instrumentation, Pritchard’s discovered attempting to make amends with an ex. This separation tends to make him really feel as although he’s been drearily carrying the weight of the globe on his shoulders. Along the way, there’s even a trumpet solo. It is clearly — especially instrumentally — a track that reaches back in time extended ahead of Britpop even existed.

The album ends with “No Stress,” which lyrically contradicts most every thing that comes ahead of it. “We’re just obtaining a superior time,” Pritchard sings, devoid of a care in the globe. Ah, if only this was the identical stress-no cost globe described in the albums other 14 songs. Elsewhere, a stress cooker existence is described.

To be clear, although, the Britpop genre has under no circumstances generally been all constructive vibrations. Let’s not overlook, Blur can actually be downers at instances just after all. When you add it all up, even so, Let’s Go Sunshine comes off as extra of a want than a command.
