In a conversation involving Paul Pope and Seth Jones, Jones talks about his most up-to-date book, A Covert Action: Reagan, the CIA, and the Cold War Struggle in Poland. He discusses Reagan’s strategy to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe and how the CIA aided Poland’s opposition movement by assisting it to run an underground media campaign, which, in the end, helped it survive the onslaught from the regime. Pope and Jones also go over the circumstances that set up covert action for results. Here’s a hint: Do not attempt to bake the complete cake. This occasion was co-sponsored by the Intelligence Research Project, the Clements Center, and the Strauss Center.
Seth Jones is the Harold Brown chair at the Center for Strategic & International Research, exactly where he is also director of the Transnational Threats Project and senior adviser for the International Safety Plan. Dr. Jones teaches at Johns Hopkins University’s College of Sophisticated International Research and the Center for Homeland Defense and Safety at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate College.
