Let’s Rock  SouthamptonAndyB

Southampton Typical
6th July 2019

Critique of the one particular day 80s Retro festival by second generation Louder Than War writer Lora Canty, with acts at Southampton which includes Marc Almond, Shalamar, Neville Staple and Andy Bell of Erasure….her father may well chip in some undesirable information from time to time…

For any one new to the notion of Let’s Rock, it is fundamentally a one particular day festival devoted to 80s Pop Music (Dad was mumbling on about it not getting all 80s Music since it didn’t incorporate a thing known as Bogshed) that plays with various bills all more than the nation. Let’s Rock Southampton has been going for a couple of years, we’ve noticed the final two ahead of currently. 80s Pop Music was revolutionary at the time and feels that this precise style of music stayed with us, with such a variety of ages of individuals enjoying it. On the other hand, to my Dad, it appears strange that I take pleasure in his generation’s music when he in no way liked his parents’ tunes himself, when he was young at least. But I feel that the 80s was a major time of evolution in music with synthesisers coming in and that could be why it has stuck with us via appropriate up to currently. Simply because it sounded like the future when it very first emerged, has it in some way stayed ahead of items?

Me and Dad wended our way to Southampton Typical and positioned ourselves appropriate at the front for the start out. Let’s Rock commences with a thing known as “The Retrobates Party” – fundamentally this is a musical outfit backing a rolling cast of singers (they also supply musical accompaniment to everybody up to Neville Staple Band). Out of these maybe only the remaining members of Musical Youth, offered their decent chart profession, could appear rueful up the bill to the likes of Johnny Hates Jazz. Anyway this section of the show broke down to:

Owen Paul singing Do not You Neglect About Me (Easy Minds) and My Favourite Waste Of Time then Jennie Belle Star with Sweet Dreams (Eurythmics) and Sign Of The Instances followed by Belouis Some who did Imagination and a further song I didn’t catch the name of Musical Youth performing a great version of Pass The Dutchie and (Elizabeth) Westworld delivering the finale for The Retrobates Celebration with Sonic Boom Boy.

Subsequent came Toyah. These following acts have been allotted 20-25 minutes each and every, so a mini set truly. Toyah sang: Superior Morning Universe (when it was just afternoon!), It is A Mystery, Thunder In The Mountains, Echo Beach and I Want To Be Free…Not truly being aware of of her beforehand I basically truly enjoyed Toyah and identified that she brought a great vibe and power to the festival.

Johnny Hates Jazz followed, they played their major hit Shattered Dreams, but didn’t truly hold my consideration. Limahl from Kajagoogoo (what ever that is!) then sang Also Shy, Steppin Out (Joe Jackson), Save A Prayer (Duran Duran), Life’s What You Make It (Speak Speak) and Under no circumstances Ending Story – While he may well not have the very best voice in the planet (Dad coughs audibly in the background), I did uncover that Also Shy was incredibly good to listen to.

Arriving on stage subsequent in a curious suit was Thomas Dolby, who sang the following – Europa And the Pirate Twins, Hyperactive, Heroes (with moving David Bowie Reside Help footage) and She Blinded Me With Science. To my shock, this may well have been the most exciting act of the day. It sparked curiosity in me about electronic music in the 80s, which I will stick to up. It seemed not as well various from electronic pop music of currently, but also had that unmistakable 80s style imbedded into it. A incredibly enjoyable 25 minutes.

I had noticed Belinda Carlisle a couple of years ago and she didn’t disappoint, singing amongst other people Circle In the Sand, I Get Weak and Heaven Is A Location On Earth. I identified Belinda Carlisle great exciting to watch, in particular hearing Heaven Is A Location On Earth. She perfomed incredibly properly regardless of some sound difficulties on stage. The sound was a bit in and out at occasions, but these are the breaks with outside music events I suppose.

From right here on in all the singers had their personal bands backing them. Let’s Rock (and 80s Pop as well, to be truthful) can be a bit cheesy at occasions, but it became mile-higher gorgonzola for the tacky Black Lace singing along to a tape. Hmmm! Anyway on to improved items.

The Neville Staple Band have been very first group in this aspect of the show, from now on there have been quick intervals amongst the acts though the bands set up, but not for as well lengthy. Let’s Rock is truly properly run in this aspect. Neville and band played Gangsters, Johnny Also Negative, Truly Saying Some thing, A Message To You Rudy and the Skinhead Symphony. My Dad truly enjoyed this band and he’s generally singing A Message To You Rudy about the property. Personally, I believed that they weren’t poor, but not truly my style.

Subsequent came From The Jam and amongst their songs have been That is Entertainment, Town Referred to as Malice, Down In The Tube Station At Midnight, David Watts, Strange Town, Going Underground, Start out! and they completed with Eton Rifles. Once again Dad was dancing about (properly he calls it dancing!) and truly enjoyed this band. I have to admit they have been pretty great, even although I do not like considerably of the music he plays at dwelling! While Dad’s dancing did annoy me!

We had a bit of a sit down while Nik Kershaw played. He sang The Riddle, Do not Let the Sun Go Down On Me, Wouldn’t It Be Superior and The 1 And Only (he did create it!), though we attempted to stroll round the web page (which wasn’t that uncomplicated). From right here on in the sets have been longer, major up to the headline acts.

Quickly Shalamar have been prepared to play, they truly had great stage act and got everybody moving. They played Second Time About, I Can Make You Really feel Superior, Evening To Recall, Take That To The Bank and they have been a good act to act to dance to! Shalamar supplied great, catchy music for quite considerably everybody to take pleasure in and they did.

Marc Almond was subsequent and Dad told me his guitarist was from a band known as Sigue Sigue Sputnik(?). Anyway he played truly properly and supplied a true character to the show. He sang Tainted Adore (Hoorah!)/Exactly where Did Our Adore Go, Bedsitter, Something’s Got A Hold Of My Heart, Torch, Say Hello Wave Goodbye…very great I believed. My favourite song was naturally Tainted Adore! Totally good act, truly enjoyable. We even sang Marc Satisfied Birthday at the finish!

Andy 1

Erasure’s Andy Bell came on stage following a short fracas in the front of the crowd – I’ve in no way noticed something like that at Let’s Rock ahead of and it was fortunately sorted out promptly by the safety individuals. A word for them – they have generally been polite, cheerful and valuable in my view and did what can be a tricky job incredibly properly. Back to the music. Andy played Who Desires Adore Like That, Ship Of Fools, Respect and Blue Savannah. (Dad’s comment: I enjoyed Andy Bell’s set far extra than I believed I would. These Erasure songs are truly constructed to final and he’s an endearing presence on stage, good stuff) I basically identified that Andy Bell did a incredibly entertaining set with some good tunes, I liked it a lot.

We have been each tiring a bit by the time Billy Ocean came on stage (properly Dad is truly old), but he played a true good version of Adore Truly Hurts Without the need of You, a great Motown-like song and covered Bob Marley’s No Lady No Cry….he was in great voice and the crowd seemed to truly like him. We have been tired at the finish, but we saw them all! Billy brought Let’s Rock Southampton to a great close.

No matter if you would take pleasure in Let’s Rock is truly down to your personal liking/toleration for 80s Pop in all its types and tolerance of a couple of individuals getting rather drunk and acting silly (but that is not the organisers’ fault – you would get far worse at other festivals I feel). General it was a exciting day with lots of great music and it is also affordable worth for dollars as well. The quickly turn more than of the acts prevented you from acquiring bored and most of the bands and singers nonetheless had considerably to offer you. The answer to why a person like me born in 2004 likes 80s Pop is easy – they just came up with some good tunes back then and nonetheless know how to carry out them properly in 2019.
