Def Robot: Sabbatical  (Self-released on Bandcamp)

DL /Restricted CD

Out now

Modestly understated as ‘Former bandmates in Kerosene, Paul Taylor and David Hancox, started recording beneath the Def Robot name in 2019. With a shared enthusiasm for punk-rock-Americana, mixed with northern English grit and dark film noir, the sound and songs took shape’. In six months they have made extra high quality perform than some bands do in six years. Wayne Carey raved about them right here and right here on LTW. Now it is Ged Babeys turn…

Prolific is the word.  I have never ever, in all my years,  recognized a band release six albums in six months.  It is ridiculous. It is beyond belief.  U2 or the Stone Roses took YEARS to create, record and release a new album.

Def Robot have written, recorded and released a boxed set’s worth of albums in half a year.  I want The McWhirter brothers and Roy Castle have been nonetheless about so we could see Def Robot on Record Breakers …. dedication, that is what you require.  And a lot of no cost time….

Perhaps that is it,  they have been produced redundant and have time on their hands and 20 years worth of stockpiled material to draw upon and ultimately fantastic and release…

Def Robot are a truly superior band – they rock.  They have a knack of writing a superior chorus. They mix and shuffle the pace and vibe and are not a 1-trick pony.   If they lived in my locality I would be a fan and a mate. I would’ve bumped into them at each and every half-decent significant indie/grunge rock-show more than the previous twenty-5 years or extra.

I know this due to the fact I can inform, from this album, they have been in adore with the rock’n’roll of the 90’s – Nirvana, Therapy, Pixies, Manics… They have absorbed and loved so a lot music that when they make their personal the influences are there, loud and proud and coming more than clear as a bell.  If I was in a band it would be precisely the very same ….

I’ve dipped into the prior albums and heard the subsequent, but obtaining spent some time living with Sabbatical it appears to be the choose of the bunch in that it has an immediacy, familiarity and high quality songs.

There are quite a few ‘bits’ which remind me of  other bands (Pixies in unique appear to be a favourite) but following a even though it just sounds like Def Robot….  Cynics will generally dismiss bands like this as ‘a rip-off’ and soundalikes – but getting realistic, these bands have been magnificent and to get close to that really feel with no resorting to the rapid-buck selection of getting a tribute/ covers band is an achievement and requires some ability.  (And they would sound majestic reside and loud in a tiny venue on a Saturday evening when you’ve  had a bellyful of life and have a bellyful of beer…)

Here’s a regular track-by-track dissection ( following a couple cans … Wayne Carey style…)

Television Lies – the glam-stomp alt-rock opener sounds like Therapy? playing Slade (or vice versa) on a song about cathode ray poisoning utilizing a handful of chord alterations from I Wanna Be Your Dog.

Krackalite gets extremely close to Nirvana territory musically and lyrically – but is entertaining and frisky.

Significance is a twenty-4 carat classic. While it has components of Pixies, Nirvana, Manics and even the Who – it is a prospective floor-filler, bounce-along Indie Disco/ Option Club Evening winner.

Neon Lights is a excellent bit of dark perverama and a neat pastiche of the Doors (Alabama Song and Soul Kitchen) – you can inform the band are obtaining entertaining on this track.

Wishing My Days Away has some lovely twangy guitar and a cool lyric. Reminds me of terrific lost 90’s band Compulsion.

Arthouse -clipped post-punk to get started with but a wonderful huge chorus – the only annoying issue is the American-accented vocal.

Superior With A Drink – is a deliberately cliched piece of blues-rock pisstaking I envision, accomplished with a straight face, the crowd-pleasing anthem about how ‘everything appears superior with a drink’. I hope it is irony…

Get Back In Manage is Def Robot obtaining a go at getting a thrash Metal band – in all probability extra entertaining to play than listen to!

Persistance  – lovely chugging surf instrumental – sounds like Therapy re-writing Ana.

Simpatico  – some terrific Generation Terrorists guitar in this.

Sabbatical appears to me to be Def Robots equivalent to Troublegum – an album of American influenced alt-rock but shot by way of with a industrial really feel and anthemic tunes.

These songs require to be on some Television or film soundtracks – the only way a band like this are gonna make any income these days.

Their other albums noticed to have dark psychedelic, brooding post-punk and gothic influences and i’m gonna have to discover the time to listen to them properly… and I would urge you to do the very same.

In a industry saturated with re-troubles and greatest hits packages, boxsets and the like, it tends to make a lot extra sense to verify out and invest in the back catalogue of Def Robot – as they have all the components of the classics absorbed and rearranged into new, original shapes and colours, words and music.

It is a cliche, but this is an album of ‘driving music’. Motorway, foot down, stereo on loud, singalong rock….  Significance -Sig! Nif! Ick! Ance!
